The Principal Speaks
Sara E. Clinkor opened the wide, wooden doors to an enormous, rectangular room full of incoming sixth-graders. She gazed in amazement at the high ceiling with three elaborate chandeliers hanging from it, and gaped at the stained-glass windows that sent multicolored patterns over the students. This is a multi-purpose room? She thought incredulously. It looks more like a cathedral! Or a ballroom! I'm surprised we haven't been told to come in formal dress!
Sara's short, black hair bounced slightly as she wandered curiously past large crowds of excited preteens in an attempt to find a seat. She finally found a relatively empty space where a spiky-haired boy in a purple t-shirt seemed to be annoying everyone around him. A girl with curly blond hair had just sauntered away indignantly after he had popped one too many paper bags in her face. That guy looks like a magnet for trouble, Sara observed. Long, long ago, in the country of Glampalia, it was not unusual to see dragons with their scorching breath and caves full of valuable jewels; unicorns galloping through meadows, their horns gleaming in the moonlight; or fairies buzzing happily through forests on their tiny wings. These and other such mythical creatures roamed the lands alongside the other animals that are familiar today. Although such creatures are now a thing of the past, some magic still thrives in a small fraction of the population.
At the end of each school year, all Glampalian fifth grade students were required to have their DNA tested for signs of a certain unusual ability. Those who were found to have this ability were enrolled in schools specifically designed for them. These unique schools were located around the country, in almost every major city. One such school was called the Nymahaxen Academy for Laminas.
